The challenge of change in WI Cricket

anderson_bowledThe West Indies cricket team now seems to be in tatters even as we claim to be preparing for the 20/20 World Cup.
The tour of England has shown just how inept the vast majority of our players are at this stage in their careers despite the anxiety on the part of much of the regional media to extol their virtues when they defeated England a few months ago in a test series to which the Caribbean played host.
West Indian cricket supporters have been shocked into realism by the flagrant lack of commitment on the part of the cricketers on the tour of England. It must be more than the weather to which blame can be apportioned for the demise of the team.  Leadership is lacking all around beginning with the West Indies Cricket Board.

The Caribbean Games and regional integration

In the late 1990s the Ministers of Sport of Caricom entertained the idea that the Caribbean people have provided the world with some outstanding athletes in a variety of sports but have been denied the opportunity of seeing them perform in real life at home in the region. Thus was born the idea of the Caribbean Games.
The Inaugural Caribbean Games is scheduled to take place in Trinidad and Tobago during the period 12th to 19th July 2009.

Southern Games
Many people across the Caribbean may well remember the annual Southern Games of old hosted at the time by TEXACO, which, at the time, controlled the refinery at Pointe – a – Pierre, Trinidad.
From humble beginnings Southern Games was transformed into the Caribbean’s most prestigious sporting spectacle. It grew from two days to four then on to five. The event spanned two weekends and there was no end to the excitement.
Southern Games featured just two sports – Athletics and Cycling. There was no synthetic surface for the track and field athletes nor was there any concrete, asphalt or wooden Velodrome for the cyclists. The entire competition was contested on an impeccably maintained and superbly prepared grass surface. Read the rest of this entry »

West Indies continue foolishness

anderson_bowledThere never seems to be a dull moment for West Indies cricket. Every time that things appear as though they are getting better they somehow take a turn for the worst.
In the recent past we have had the 20/20 debacle which led to the legal action with sponsors, Digicel. We have also had the embarrassment of the dismissal of Tony Deyal. There was the dismissal then reinstatement then ‘resignation’ of Donald Peters.
Then we beat up on England in the Test series before and the 20/20 before losing in the One Day tournament all in the Caribbean. Read the rest of this entry »
