The Caribbean’s performance at the recently concluded World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany, has once more shown that the region does possess immense potential in this particular sport to such an extent that the international profile of all of the countries has been lifted beyond expectations.

Significantly, the medals and prize monies have spread more widely amongst the Caribbean than before.

The Bolt strikes again

The 13th edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) comes to a conclusion on Sunday 23 August with the lingering memory of the remarkable achievement of Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in the 100m.

Generally the 100m is seen as the single event that allows one to earn the title, ‘The fastest man in the world’.

Sport and the politics of SVG

Much has been said and written about the state of sporting facilities in St Vincent and the Grenadines and yet no one seems to be listening.
The government of the day did much to appeal to the young people of this country in the campaign for the 2001 general elections when the now ruling party seemed to have thought it important to win the youth vote. Several years on the government has been unable to convince the nation that it has any understanding of the role sport plays in the development of its citizens. Pan Am Juniors raise key issues

Trinidad and Tobago played host to the 15th Pan American Junior Athletics Championships during the period 31 July to 2 August, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. At the conclusion of the Championships the USA finished well ahead of the other participating teams with a total of 56 medals – 21 gold, 22 silver and 13 bronze. Cuba was second with six gold medals while Mexico finished third with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals. Jamaica, the athletics powerhouse of the English-speaking Caribbean could only manage fourth position in the overall standings.
