Athletics in our schools – the challenges of early 2012

January sees the commencement of the athletics competition season for the majority of schools in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

This is one of the times of the year when all students seem all too eager to show some measure of support for sport.

Times have nonetheless changed and many questions are now being raised about the level of involvement of the vast majority of our students in sport.

Coaches and our sporting youth

During his presentation of the feature address at the recently concluded awards ceremony for Team Athletics St Vincent and the Grenadines, Lennox Adams, a former president of both the athletics governing body and the National Olympic Committee, reflected on the stance adopted by some of today’s leaders that our youth constitute a lost generation.

Adams rejected the notion that our youths are lost. Instead he focused on the fact that with the immense potential possessed by our youths they do have the capacity to take this country well into the future through their involvement and successes in sport.

On Saturday 7 January Team Athletics St Vincent and the Grenadines hosted its annual Awards Ceremony for achievements in 2011. The Ceremony came one month late but was nonetheless an important occasion for the development of the sport in this country.

The challenges of sport in 2012

The last year was filled with challenges that threatened the future of sport as we had come to know it.

We have had the matter of the problems at the level of international football, the seeming uncontrolled growth in the use of drugs in sport, the rearing of the ugly head of racism in sport and the conflict between the West Indies Cricket Board and several of its players.
