Celebrating our IOC Membership

Earlier this week, Tuesday 22 May 2012, the St Vincent and the Grenadines National Olympic Committee (NOC) observed the 25th anniversary of its membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) custodian of the International Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games.

Many may recall that earlier this year the NOC announced that this is a year of many celebrations for the organisation.

On 6 January 2012 the NOC observed the 30th anniversary of the founding of the organisation by Lennox Adams. It was then called the St Vincent and the Grenadines National Olympic Association.

FO Mason’s last game

FO Mason described his encounter with Frank Worrell, one of the famous Three Ws of West Indies Cricket and captain of the West Indies Cricket team, a legend in his own right, thus:

Well this was in about 1947. I remember it was 1947, because I didn’t get picked on the St. Vincent side. They said I was a small boy. ‘School boys couldn’t play with big men’ in 1946… one selector said that you know. He said, ‘School boys, big men, separate them.’ So I said, alright. But in 1947 I was out of school, started to work at the Agricultural Department and they said well we going give him a try against this side from Barbados coming down with Frank Worrell and Frankie Thomas and Brewster and some of the big names in Barbados cricket at the time. Football’s immense potential

The recently concluded Hairoun Community Football Championships may well have much to tell us about the immense potential that exists here for the development of the sport and of the entire nation.

While initially the football fans around the country seemed tentative about the success of the event this changed significantly as the competition wore on to the point where football authorities here could pat themselves on the back for capturing once more the enthusiasm for the sport that our people are known for.

Sport tourism and the future of our country

This is not the first time that this Column seeks to address the matter of the vast potential that this country has in respect of the sports tourism nor will it be the last.

There has been much talk in this country about a shift in focus from what has been the norm for many years to sports tourism. The fact is that it has remained just that – talk.

For several years we have watched the crowds move around the country during the Easter weekend. On each occasion it seems to rekindle an interest in sports tourism only to wane in the traditional ‘nine days’ marvel of so many other things that attract our attention in this country.
