Football’s challenges continue

Football troubles never seem to end. That must be the conclusion of many of the sports most loyal fans around the world after all that has been happening over the past several months.

We have had the spectre of the FIFA elections, the so-called ‘cash for votes scandal, the seeming football demise of Austin ‘Jack’ Warner and now the unfortunate remarks made by Beleaguered FIFA President, Sepp Blatter on racist comments on the field of play. Here at home of course we have had the accusations of Bin Hammam’s money flying left, right and centre, football elections, the suspension of the General Secretary and the resignation of the technical director and head coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF).

Exciting Bids lift Commonwealth Games

The twin-island Federation of St Kitts and Nevis played host last week to the family of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC). We shall address the latter organization and its meetings on another occasion.

The Commonwealth Games Federation held its Annual General Assembly at the Marriott on St Kitts. The Commonwealth Games Association and National Olympic Committee of that country successfully won the right to be host of the Assembly two years ago by defeating Northern Ireland. Disturbing global sport politics

Under normal circumstances the Annual Carifta Congress would have been incident-free. At the Annual Carifta Congress in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, in 2007, however, it was a different matter. IAAF president, Lamine Diack, turned what would otherwise have been his address to the delegates into a tirade on the NACAC president, Amadeo Francis, informing them that while he thought that the latter was his friend he had lent his support to Minos, the Greek, to challenge him for the presidency of the IAAF. The gathering was obviously shocked and Francis sought to suggest that it was at a time when Diack had indicated that he was no longer going after the presidency; that he was going to retire.

The 16th edition of the quadrennial Pan American Games came to a close on the evening of Sunday 30 October 2011 in the beautiful city of Guadalajara, Mexico, with a scintillating display of genuine Mexican culture, just as was witnessed at the official opening on 14 October. Sport partnership for quality facilities

During the course of this year, 2011, we have witnessed the challenges faced by Vincentian sportspeople as they sought to bring honour and glory to this fair land when engaged in competitions at the regional and international levels.
