Samuel captures Carifta silver

Canadian based Delhonni Samuel, son of Dane Samuel formerly of Sion Hill, captured this country’s lone medal at the recently concluded 38th Carifta Games held in St Lucia over the Easter weekend.
Samuel, who won bronze in the 3000m Under 17 in 2007 in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands found the early pace of the Jamaican, Kemoy Campbell, too much and bided his time with the rest of the pack for the 12 lap event. Campbell won in 14:40.67, a new Carifta record while Samuel finished in 15:42.51.
Courtney Samuel earned a semi final place in the Under 20 Boys 200m but found the going too tough.
Nikita Toney, who was making her first appearance at Carifta Games placed 8th in the Shot Put with a throw of 10.03m.
According to team officials, Rosmund Griffith and Byron Quamina, felt that the athletes could do better with more and consistent training. The best opportunity now appears to be with our field events athletes and distance runners, the duo stated on their return to the state.
Other members of the team were Collette Charles and Kyle Greaves.
