Thomas Saunders Secondary School’s team to PENN RELAYS 2017

APR 21 2017 – The Thomas Saunders Secondary School is located at Richmond Hill, in the heart of capital Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was founded in 2005 as an initiative by the Government to introduce universal Secondary education. The school is housed on the renovated premise that formerly housed the Richmond Hill Primary School.

Mr. Frank Jones was appointed as the first principal of the Thomas Saunders Secondary. He was later succeeded by Mr. Cecil Charles, followed by Mr. Glasley Lewis and eventually the present principal Mr. John Renton.
A Co-Ed institution, the Thomas Saunders Secondary quickly established itself as a leading sporting and educational establishment. In the sporting arena, Thomas Saunders became a household name, especially in the Track and Field domain. The annual Inter Secondary Schools Track and Field championships saw Thomas Saunders gaining one title after another.

John Renton

It is of no surprise that the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, under the able leadership of its principal Mr. John Renton and the school’s Physical Education teacher – Mr. Godfrey Harry, created History for St. Vincent and the Grenadines by becoming the first school from the Island to participate in the prestigious Penn Relays. In 2011, seven (7) male Island boys represented the Thomas Saunders Secondary and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The athletes participated in the 4x100m and the 4x400m events.
The National Lotteries Authority and tremendous support from the Vincentian community in the United States led then by Mr. James Cordice, along with fundraising ventures and gifts from well-wishers accounted for the school’s participation at the relays.

Godfrey Harry

Thomas Saunders’ first participation at the Penn Relays was led by a delegation headed by Mr. John Renton (Principal), Mr. Godfrey Harry (Coach and Physical Education Teacher), Ms. Dawana Balcombe (Team Manager) and Mr. Michael Olliviere (Assistant Coach).
In 2012, Thomas Saunders Secondary represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines again at the Penn Relays and added to the representatives, a Female team who participated in both the 4x100m and the 4x400m events. Consequently, the Thomas Saunders faithfully continue to represent SVG each year – this year 2017 – being the school’s 7th year at the Penn Relays.
A dedicated Penn Relay Committee – comprising of 10 teachers, have committed their time and effort in aiding in ensuring that the school is able to participate at the prestigious Penn Relays.
The Thomas Saunders Secondary is proud to expose athletic talent at the Penn Relays!
