CELEBRATING CARIBBEAN WOMEN IN SPORT

While gender equity in and through sport is the ultimate goal of all of us in the Olympic Movement, as Caribbean people we understand only too well, the importance of educating, developing and celebrating our girls and women every day of every year as part of our culture. It is also the reason we join the international community in observing International Women’s Day on 8 March 2026, under the theme, ‘Give to Gain’.

The theme in inclusive of the global goal of gender equity while reminding all of us that while we have made significant progress in this regard, we are still a very long way from its attainment. In the Caribbean we continue to have an increasing number of women rising to leadership in every aspect of sport. We all must commit to sustainability in this regard while ensuring that meritocratic principles, especially equality of opportunity, are always applicable in all that we do.
The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees boasts two women on its five-member Executive. Among the broader membership of our organisation, there are six (6) women serving as Presidents and 10 as General Secretaries of their respective NOCs/CGAs, of the 30 CANOC members, a feat that allows us to stand tall amongst major multi-sport organisations around the world in pursuit of gender equity. Many of our leaders have distinguished themselves by having gained the confident support of their members, elevating them to office on the executive committees and commissions of regional and international multi-sport bodies such as Centro Caribe Sport (CCS), Panam Sports, Commonwealth Sport, ANOC and the IOC. Several of our women feature on executive bodies of International Federations (IF) and their respective continental bodies.
Caribbean sports administrators are building knowledge, networks, and leadership at the 2025 CANOC Workshop in Guyana. Through strong partnerships, CANOC continues to support capacity building for women in sport.
CANOC remains decidedly proud of our outstanding female athletes who stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts on one regional and international podium after another, holding aloft the flags of their respective nations.

Finally, we continue to support our Gender Equity Commission in its sustained effort at organising a variety of activities aimed at promoting, educating and training girls and women across the region, to seize opportunities in and through sport, to earn their rightful place in every society in this Caribbean we are reconstructing each and every day.

Congratulations to all our women in sport, in any capacity, on this International Women’s Day 2026

President
Keith Joseph
