ASUNCIÓN RECEIVES PANAM SPORTS EVALUATION COMMISSION |
Authorities of the Pan American Sports Organization visited the Paraguayan capital for 2 days, where they toured the sports facilities, learned about the new projects, and met with the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña. Asunción has planned the construction of an Athletics Stadium and an Arena of more than 10 thousand spectators for the continental event. As part of the process of choosing the host city for the XXI Pan American Games, the Panam Sports Evaluation Commission began a tour of Paraguay and Brazil, intending to know in situ the proposals of the candidate cities and be able to prepare a report, which will be presented at the Extraordinary General Assembly on October 10. The first stop was the city of Asunción del Paraguay. The Commission, made up of President Neven Ilic, Secretary General Jimena Saldaña, and members Sara Rosario, Mario Moccia, and Dennis Knight, completed a series of meetings and visits to the different sports venues and also to the land where the Pan American Village is projected.”We seek to be certain, first, that the Games can be held in the best way and that there are the necessary guarantees from the highest organizations, institutions or the President of the Republic for their execution. These must be well organized so that the athletes feel comfortably cared for and they can compete in good-level facilities. The most important thing is that athletes feel that they can come and compete in the best way and that we can offer all the guarantees that are necessary for them,” said the President of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic.”For us it is a great joy to have the Evaluation Commission here in Asunción. It makes us relive what we just did at ASU 2025. We are super excited and very confident. As we have said with President Santiago Peña, this is a country that is constantly growing, it is the roar of a giant, of a Lion that is waking up,” said the president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, Camilo Pérez. Among the novelties presented by Paraguayan authorities during this visit, is the confirmation in case of winning the election, of the construction of a new athletics stadium and a new Arena with a capacity of more than 10 thousand spectators in the Olympic Park.”Paraguay can offer the entire continent responsible work, the work of a team that has been working for many years. We can offer a lot of peace of mind and a lot of responsibility in managing budgets. We have a super real budget, well limited, but that will help us to have giant Games such as the Pan American Games for seniors,” added the Paraguayan IOC Member. In addition, the Commission was received by the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, at the president’s residence. On the occasion, they talked about the Paraguayan Government’s commitment to Pan American sport and the different advances they hope to have in terms of connectivity and infrastructure by 2031.”It is very important for us to talk with the authorities and the team of the candidate city Asunción. We have learned about all the changes that they intend to make to what the last Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025 were and the reality that they intend to present for the 2031 Games. We have toured the sports facilities that are going to be improved, expanded and some new ones,” said Sara Rosario, Member of the Panam Sports Evaluation Commission and president of the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee.A similar opinion was held by the president of the NOC of Saint Kitts and Nevis and member of the Commission, Dennis Knight, “we really need to understand well what the project of each candidate city consists of. We are here to evaluate them, to see what it really offers, what it hopes to do, and in the end to inform our members of the Executive Committee and the National Olympic Committees of Panam Sports.”This Wednesday, the Panam Sports Evaluation Commission will travel to Rio de Janeiro for the second stop of this tour to the candidate cities for the 2031 Pan American Games.
