Bequia All-Stars undefeated!

The Bequia All-Stars head into the final round of the Grenadines Championship undefeated with a 5 and 0 win/loss record. The Bequia team, coached by Junior Sutton defeated all teams in the first round of competition, including the Union Island All-Stars 62 to 45 on Friday and the Canouan Islanders 77 to 68 on Sunday.
In Friday’s match up, Jonas King and Bequia team captain Michael Peniston each netted 15 points to secure the victory, while Philmon Taylor of Union Island contributed 18 points. On Sunday, King also led the scoring for the Bequia All-Stars with 22 points.
The current standings have the Bequia All-Stars in first position with 50 points, the Union Island All-Stars in second place with 45 points, the Canouan Islanders in third place with 40 points, all of who have completed their first round games. Currently, the Mustique Icon hold the 4th position with 30 points, but both Mayreau (with 25 points) and Carriacou (with 20 points) has one game to play on Friday May 30th in Bequia. Mayreau’s possible win on Friday will take them into the semi finals vs. the first place team, Bequia All-Stars and a loss will qualify Mustique instead, who have a better goal difference. Carriacou’s only hope to make it now is to beat Mayreau by at least 36 points, thereby bettering Mustique’s goal difference. The standings are based on 10 points for a win and 5 points for a loss. Saturday night in Bequia on May 31st will see the 1st place team match up against the 4th place team and the 2nd place team, already determined as Union match up against the 3rd place team, being Canouan.  The winners of Saturday’s games move on to the final game on Sunday night, June 1st which will be followed by the trophy presentation, crowning the 2008 Champions! All weekend games will take place in Bequia.

Last weekend’s games to a sellout crowd at the Canouan Hard court saw very exciting competition, with several records set.  The Mayreau Kings defeated Mustique for their first win ever in the history of this competition, now in its 6th year, with Westfield Froget netting the most points, 26, for a narrow four-point victory 64 to 60. The Mustique Icon, 2006 Champions, now find themselves fighting for 4th position and a chance to make it to the finals round. Game two on Saturday night concluded after one am in the morning, going to two dramatic overtime extra periods before the Union Island All-Stars finally defeated Canouan 111 to 104. Veteran Union Island All-Star Leroy Scrubb took his young team to victory with 29 points, much to the disappointment of Damian Harry, Canouan’s leading scorer who netted 44 points.
The Canouan Islanders will get their chance for revenge at 7:30 pm on this coming Saturday night in the first semi final match up.

The tournament concludes in Bequia June 1st with the finals and trophy presentation.
